Wed, 1st Dec 2010 New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has raised a red flag over Etisalat DB Telecom's links with Pakistan and Afghanistan. CNN-IBN has accessed Home Ministry documents which raise concerns over Etisalat DB Telecom operations in India due to its links with Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Ministry has also raised objections to a request for bringing in additional foreign investment by the company.The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for Etisalat DB Telecom has been rejected over security concerns after the Home Ministry raised objection to Etisalat DB's presence in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Obejctions have also been raised about Etisalat DB's tieup with China's Huawei, which is a leading telecommunications solutions provider. Huawei allegedly has links with China's Peoples Liberation Army.
Huawei has the capability to remotely manipulate equipment it supplies to its clients.
The Ministry has also made it clear that Director Shahid Usman Balwa should not be associated with the telecom company in any capacity.  |
