Markets zoom by 2000 points, trading halted

The BSE Sensex zoomed to touch 14,000 mark after opening reacting positively to the election results.

Stocks were frozen at the upper circuit. All sectoral indices surged with banking spearheading the rally. Trading has been halted for the whole day.

Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex opened 10.73 per cent or 1305.97 points higher at 13479.39 138.19 points to 12011.10. National Stock Exchange's Nifty was locked at 4203.30, higher by 14.48 per cent or 531.65 points.

The market mood is very upbeat after a decisive election victory for the ruling coalition boosted hopes for a stable government that would push reforms to lift sagging growth.

Nifty futures traded in Singapore were up 11.6 percent by 0314 GMT, pointing to a higher opening in India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's left-of-centre coalition won a second term after a clear victory in the general election.

The Congress party-led coalition may look at stake sales in state firms to fund its development programmes and repair a bruised economy.

Asian markets were trading lower on Monday, with Japan's Nikkei down 2.9 percent, while MSCI's measure of other Asian markets fell 1.4 percent.

The 30-share BSE index rose 2.53 percent, or 300.51 points, to 12,173.42 on Friday.
